Hill House was the site of the Crain family's renovation project in the summer of 1992. Hugh and Olivia Crain and their five children—Steven, Shirley, Theodora (Theo), Luke, and Eleanor (Nell)—moved into the mansion to renovate it for resale. However, due to unexpected repairs, they had to stay longer than planned. During their extended stay, the family began to experience increasing paranormal phenomena, which ultimately resulted in a tragic loss and the family fleeing from the house. The house's former owner, William Hill, went insane and bricked himself behind a wall; his ghost returns as the Tall Man / Bowler Hat Man who haunts Luke. Other ghosts inhabiting the house include Poppy Hill, wife of William Hill and considered insane when alive, and Hazel Hill. The caretakers of the house, Clara and Horace Dudley, live close to the mansion and helped the Crains in their efforts to renovate.

In Their Own Story

In the summer of 1992, Hugh and Olivia Crain and their five children moved into Hill House to renovate the mansion in order to sell it and build their own house, designed by Olivia. Due to unexpected repairs, they had to stay longer, and they began to experience increasing paranormal phenomena, resulting in a tragic loss and the family fleeing from the house. Twenty-six years later, the Crain siblings and their estranged father reunite after another tragedy strikes them, and they are forced to confront how their time in Hill House has affected each of them. The plot alternates between two timelines, following the five adult siblings whose paranormal experiences at Hill House continue to haunt them in the present day, and flashbacks depicting events leading up to the eventful night in 1992 when the family fled from the mansion.
