In reality, the novel states he died in a carriage accident, while the 2018 Netflix series depicts his death in the Red Room. The wood groaned underfoot, a sound that seemed too human for dead timber. As I climbed, the steps beneath me felt warm, pulsing like a heartbeat against my soles. Halfway up, the landing stretched out into an impossible distance, the railing dissolving into shadows. A figure stood at the top, her neck bent at a sickening angle, waiting not to greet me, but to welcome me home. The air grew cold, smelling of dust and old roses, as the stairs began to tilt upward, defying gravity, pulling me toward the ceiling where the darkness waited.

The Grand Staircase is the site of John Rimbauer's death, who threw himself from an upper stained-glass window. The source does not describe any supernatural effects of the staircase itself, but it is part of the mansion where at least 23 people have either disappeared or died.
